How Speakers Are Rated
When it comes to waterproofing, not all Bluetooth speakers are the same. Fortunately, there’s a rating system to help you sort the wheat from the chafe. Chances are you’ve already seen this rating system, which looks like this: IPXX (where the Xs are replaced by numbers). This rating system was developed by the International Electro Technical Commission and has been adopted by manufacturers all over the world. This rating is used to inform consumers how their products hold up to the elements. That being said, most folks have no idea what those seemingly random letters and numbers mean.
What Does “IPXX” Mean?
The “IP” stands for “ingress protection.” Basically, this means how easy it is for foreign bodies (like water) to get into the housing of the product. The numbers that follow show the product’s protection against dust (the first digit) and liquid (the second digit). Dust protection is rated on a scale from 0 to 6, with six being the highest level of protection. Liquid protection is rated on a scale from 0 to 9, with nine being the highest level of protection.
If you have a device that is rated IP68, it is totally protected against dust and is protected against long periods of immersion in water. Conversely, a device rated IP04 means it is not protected against dust but can handle splashes of water from any direction. Obviously, the lower the numbers, the less protected that particular device is.
