This method essentially adds a contact as a relationship to your own contact card in your Contacts. Another plus point of adding relationships to your contact is that if you have Contacts synced in iCloud across your iOS devices, they’ll automatically be updated on your other devices. Simply follow any of the two methods described below to add a relationship to any contact on your Mac.

How to Add a Relationship Using Siri

The easiest method to add a relationship to a contact is by using Siri, described below:

  1. Open up Siri on your Mac by either the Dock or Spotlight. Alternatively, you can click on the Siri logo on the top-right of your Mac’s display. If you have “Hey, Siri” enabled, you can easily access that way as well.

  2. Specify the name of the contact and your relationship in a single sentence to Siri. For example, I’ll specify Sarah as my sister: “Siri, Sarah is my sister.”

  3. Siri should automatically understand and confirm whether the contact you specified is correct or not.

  4. Once you reply yes, it’ll automatically update the contact’s details accordingly.

How to Add a Relationship Using Contacts App

The second method to add a relationship to a contact is using the Contacts app. Although this method is a bit lengthier, it’ll allow you to gain a better understanding of how exactly a relationship is added to your contact. You can also remove it in the future by using the same method and erasing the relationship. The method is described below:

  1. Open the Contacts app on your Mac. You can do this from the dock or Spotlight.

  2. Select your own contact card. It’ll be on the top of the list.

  3. Click on “Edit” and then “+.”

  4. Click on More Fields, and then select “Related Name.”

  5. Enter the name of the contact (the relationship) and specify the relationship from the list on the left.

  6. Once done, your relationship will be added to your contact. You can also click on “Custom Label” to add another label to your contact that isn’t included in the list of relationships. Using this method you can specify a relationship for a contact and use Siri to easily call or message the contact. As mentioned above, you can use the second method to also remove a relationship. In step 5, simply remove the relationship from the contact. Did you find this method useful for your Mac? Let us know in the comments section below!
