What is Adaptive Brightness

If you are running a modern version of Windows 10, you are probably “enjoying” a feature called Adaptive Brightness. What this feature does is use your laptop’s light sensors to adjust the display’s brightness according to the light that surrounds you. This brightness adjustment can be very annoying because you may want the brightness of your screen to be brighter, but this feature doesn’t let you adjust it. So, unless you disable the Adaptive Brightness feature, I’m afraid you are stuck with the current brightness.

How to Disable/Enable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10

The good news is that whether you want to enable it or disable it, the steps for both things are the same. You don’t have to worry about trying to remember two completely different steps. The first thing you need to do is to click on the Start button, and in the search bar type “Power Options.”

Select “Change Plan Settings” on whichever power plan you are currently using or wish to modify. At the bottom of your screen you will need to click on “Change advanced power settings” (the words in blue).

Once you are done, you should see the following box appear.

Slowly scroll down until you see the Display option and click on the small plus sign beside it. After clicking you should see more options appear, and among those options you should see “Enable adaptive brightness.” Make the changes you want to make and click on OK so your options can be saved. Adaptive brightness is not always a bad thing, and when you are mobile it can help you save some battery life to keep you up and running. The best thing you can do is keep it on when you are running on your laptop’s battery and keep it off when you are plugged in and don’t have to worry about running out of power. I prefer to manually adjust the brightness of my laptop’s display instead of having Windows 10 do it for me.

Toggle Adaptive Brightness via System Settings

Another way you can change your display brightness is by going to “Settings -> System -> Display” and scrolling down until you see “Adjust my screen brightness automatically.” Either toggle it on or off, whatever you wish to do.

If you don’t see this option on your laptop, it’s probable that your computer lacks the light sensors needed for the feature to work. Therefore, it does not show you the option.

Conclusion

Changing the adaptive brightness settings was as easy as pie, and if you ever want to change it back to how it was before, now you know how to do it.
